It's been another full year for the REACH team, arts students and teachers across Far North Queensland! As we  reflect on this year that is rapidly drawing to a close, we'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has participated in REACH-associated programs throughout the year and provided much valued support to ensure that the Arts are maintained as integral and invaluable learning experiences in schools and beyond. You're invited to

ALL TODAY'S PARTIES! Fri Aug 28

The Velvet Underground sang about it, William Gibson wrote about it, but 'All Tomorrow's Parties' is what we're living today. Gen Y and Z are responding to and forming a unique social landscape in the high-tech, celebrity-driven, globalised, online environment of 2009. The themes, tools and faces of our popular culture are specific to this time and place in history. So, what drives us, consumes us, amuses us, feeds us and constitutes the pop culture of today?

REACH, in partnership with crate59 and with the support of The Upholstery, presents this exhibition of new works which aims to explore popular culture through the eyes of the young people who are living it. Young and emerging Cairns-based artists will link in coalition with identified REACH Vis Arts senior students to produce work through an intensive weekend workshop and then exhibit together at crate59 artist run gallery on August 28.

Join us on the night for a feast of visual consumption!

REACH New MeDIYa Workshops with Jenny Fraser PDF Print E-mail

From June 9 - 12 new media Indigenous artist Jenny Fraser and REACH team member Liz Dunn headed up to Cooktown and Mossman State Schools to work with secondary students in a two-day workshop intensive at each site. The workshops focused on extending the students' skills, knowledge and understanding of new media software in a storytelling context.

Jenny, a highly experienced and respected artist, curator and producer, introduced students to the process of digital storytelling using Photostory and other user-friendly software programs. Cooktown students worked on creating their first ever digital stories, while Mossman students collaborated across grades 10, 11 and 12 to produce experimental videos that explored a range of conceptual and technical approaches.

The result was a busy and productive four days of digital investigation and learning where students engaged in new processes and extended their skills in a supported, intensive creative environment.

REACH would like to extend a big thanks to Jenny Fraser for her great input and enthusiasm in supporting the project and to the staff at Cooktown and Mossman who facilitated our visit.  A special thank-you to Elliot Davidson, FTV teacher at Mossman, for his energy and passion. Great stuff happening up there with a very talented and motivated group of young people - very exciting!

ROUND ONE Students to connect on-line! PDF Print E-mail

Congratulations to the 55 students from across FNQ who have been selected by their schools to become part of the REACH Student Portal!

studentsThis student portal aims to facilitate mentoring relationships between these talented and innovative group of students and local arts industry professionals in order to help guide students through creative processes, challenges and ultimately, the transition from school to a creative career via further training, education and employment. In addition to this, the site is intended to allow these selected students from across the region to form a creative network where they can connect with other like-minded and directed students across the far north. Students will be able to log in to this managed site and establish a Facebook style profile where they can upload images/audio/video of their arts work and share their ideas with other students, gain feedback from mentors, ask questions and develop creativity-based relationships with people from around the region.

Official letters congratulating each of these talented young artists have now been sent.  We encourage schools to support these students in filling in the necessary copyright consent forms/releases and permission forms which need to be posted back to Janelle Williams (c/o Trinity Bay SHS, Hoare Street Manunda Cairns 4870) by Monday 20 April.
